Audition Information

January 8 & 9     3:45 - 6:45 PM

An optional information meeting will be held Wednesday, January 7, from 3:45 - 5:45 PM in the auditorium.  Mr. Strickland will be discussing the audition, describing roles in the show, and giving a preview of the dance routine used in the auditions.  Please try to attend -- you'll get a real headstart on the auditions!

Who can audition?    6th - 12th grade students.

What do I need to audition?  A prepared song to sing (approximately 24-36 measures) and comfortable clothes that you can move in?

What will I have to do at the audition? We will warm up together as a group and then learn a short dance combination.  Each person will then sing their prepared song.  We may do some group acting exercises depending on time.  We will conclude the audition by having each person read a short section from the script.  Each auditioner will be read on only one part, but will be considered for all available roles.

What should I sing?  Any song that shows off your voice.  I recommend NOT singing a song from Oklahoma.  Good choices are songs from Broadway musicals or Disney movies (the music is very similar to Broadway songs.)  Many people sing praise songs or hymns.

Do I need to bring music?  I highly recommend bringing sheet music.  We will have a pianist available to play for you.  You can sing with a tape if you prefer, but only if the tape has no vocal track (like a karaoke or performance tape.)  You can sing acapella (without music) but most people sing better with music behind them!

I don't know much about music.  How long is 24-36 measures?  In most songs this is the equivalent of singing a verse and one chorus.  Or, approximately 20-40 seconds.

Do I have to sing?  Yes, all roles sing in Oklahoma.  However, most of the roles only sing as part of a large group.

Do I have to know how to dance? No, but dance ability will be very helpful.  Most of the dancing in the show will be easy for anyone to learn.  There will be some more difficult sections that will utilize the better dancers.

Do I need to come both days?  No.
